Facility management professionals are tasked with operations, maintenance, construction and tenancy of residential, commercial and industrial buildings or assets. They can be anyone from a building superintendent who oversees the daily needs of a building operation to a sustainability manager responsible for reducing energy costs across a single or a portfolio of properties for owners across the country. Most people who find jobs in facility management have come from other industries who appreciate an enhanced work experience drawing upon previously honed skills.
Some view facility management as just property management, although this is a facet of this industry, much more is offered to property clientele than just that. Facility management firms can also offer customers services in sustainability or energy conservation, project management, construction management, planning, maintenance and commissioning. Some of the larger facility management firms offer turnkey solutions from leasing or occupancy to construction of new buildings or tenant fit ups.
