Before the first call.

Do I need an open role to have this conversation?

No. A good share of these calls are about a role that is six months out, or a team shape someone is still deciding on. Knowing what the market pays and who is actually available is more useful before you write the job description than after.

Who will I actually speak to?

Mike Pak, who founded the firm. Not a coordinator, not a junior consultant booking a calendar slot for someone else. The person on the first call is the person who would run the search.

Is the first call a pitch?

No, and you will know inside five minutes. If the honest answer is that your role does not need a search firm, or that someone with a different specialty would serve you better, that is what you will hear. It costs us nothing to say and it saves you a month.
