Technology jobs in Canada exists across many different industries and sectors, but generally these are the occupations which include information technology, software, hardware, scientific, research, bio-medical, bio-technology and pharmaceuticals. They represent industries on their own but are also widely employed in other facets of our economy, from IT support to advanced robotics engineering and more. Technology professionals are typically highly skilled and educated individuals many graduating with degrees in computer science and engineering or diplomas in systems, data or network architecture. Recently such disruptive technologies such as blockchain or peer to peer transaction processing has stimulated further demand for this sector.
According to some studies there are approximately 71,000 companies employing 864,000 Canadians in the Tech or IT sector representing some 5.6% of the country’s workforce. The average salary of tech worker is $67,000 which is nearly 50% more than the national average of $48,000. As a whole, the technology and IT sector where 69% of firms employ only 1-4 employees is responsible for over 7.1% of GDP ($117 billion). It’s anticipated that there will be a shortfall of skilled and trained IT professionals to keep up with the ongoing demand of technology jobs as the industry continues to mature and grow well into the future.
